Yahoo Japan's Profit Soars On Auction

Yahoo Japan Corp. said Wednesday its group net profit for the fiscal half ended Sept. 31 more than doubled to
¥ 4.98 billion ($ 39.8 million) from ¥ 2.39 billion a year earlier, due to strength in its online auction and broadband services.

On a parent basis, the company's pretax profit in the period more than doubled to ¥ 9.69 billion from ¥ 4.15 billion. Yahoo Japan, an affiliate of Yahoo! Inc. of the US, did not release earnings forecasts for the full year.

The jump in group net profit in the first half was partly due to the Yahoo! BB asymmetrical digital subscriber line, or ADSL, business, which contributed to earnings throughout the first half, as well as growth in income from Yahoo's auction operations. Full- scale Yahoo! BB services began in September last year.
